Destroy Earth is a multiplayer browser game inspired by "World of Pixels" and the classic qntm blog post about destroying the Earth. Players work together to dig away the entire volume of Earth, one cubic mile at a time, on a realistic Mercator projection map.

Core Concept

The Earth has approximately 260 billion cubic miles of volume. Every click removes one cubic mile. How long will it take for humanity to collectively destroy the planet? Track global progress in real-time and compete for the top of the leaderboard.

Features

  • Real-Time Multiplayer: WebSocket-powered updates show every dig as it happens
  • Mercator Projection Map: Navigate a realistic representation of Earth with MapLibre
  • Global Leaderboard: Compete to become a Top Destroyer
  • Progress Tracking: Watch the destruction percentage and ETA update live
  • Persistent State: All digs are saved - your contribution is permanent

Technical Details

  • Three-process Node.js architecture (Gateway, Channel, DB-Writer)
  • Real-time WebSocket updates with 1-second tick system
  • GEBCO elevation data for realistic terrain representation
  • Rate-limited to prevent abuse (5 digs/second per session)
